Holding your wicket till at least the fifth down is not caution—it’s leadership.

Shreyas Iyer
Captain First, Batsman Always
Dear Shreyas,
This is a note from a keen observer and admirer—not just of your strokes, but of your stature.
You are not just a batsman. You are the captain of Punjab Kings. And that means more than the toss, the field placements, or the post-match interviews. It means you are the center of gravity for a team that needs direction, calm, and a sense of spine.
Every time you walk back to the pavilion early, it’s not just your wicket that’s gone—it’s the morale of the dressing room that takes a hit. Conversely, every over you survive—even if the scoreboard isn’t racing—sends a signal to the dugout: “We’re still in this. Watch and follow.”
You don’t have to be explosive. You have to be enduring. You don’t have to win it in the 10th over. You have to be there till the 15th.
Your presence itself is a plan. It steadies heads. It gives your younger batsmen a blueprint. Let them play around you. Let them take risks. Let them breathe, knowing that the captain has locked one end down.
And if that means a few slower starts, so be it. Holding your wicket till at least the fifth down is not caution—it’s leadership.
Your role isn't just to make runs. It’s to make sense of the chase. Stay out there, Shreyas. Your team needs you on the pitch, not watching from the dugout.
Warmly,
Outrightly Yours
